Position: Managing Director Responsible to: Anza Board
Location: Arusha
Hours: Full time – 45 hrs per week
Anza seeks a highly talented and passionate Managing Director to provide high quality programming, work effectively with prominent partners and funders, and lead the organization’s operations. The Managing Director will be responsible for Anza’s successful operations and growth in Tanzania.

THE ROLE
Strategy & Management (40%)
• Be a leader among leaders in maintaining the organizational culture, professionalism and highest quality management standards
• Supervise and manage the Tanzania-based management team (Director of Finance, Client Services Manager) and a total staff of around 20
• Support and engage regularly with both the Tanzania and UK Boards
• Set and maintain organizational objectives for the year, ensuring their effective completion
• Provide insightful and analytical updates to management, working as a partner and thought-leader
• Lead annual in-country planning processes and staff goal setting, in alignment with Anza’s vision
• Lead all All-Staff meetings, and Senior Management team meetings
• Ensure adherence with all relevant local laws and regulations, and ensure full compliance with all “bodies” – Companies House, Charity Commission, BRELA, TRA, etc. for the UK & Tanzania
• Coordinate effective use of resources from African Entrepreneur Collective (AEC)
• Manage HR within the organization, including maintaining organizational structure, job descriptions, hiring key positions, and supporting managers to do the same
• Manage staff performance within the organization, including helping managers to set KPIs, quarterly performance check-ins, and annual review processes
Financial Management & Revenue Generation (25%)
• In partnership with the Director of Finance, develop and manage the annual Anza budget
• Assist Director of Finance to conduct month-end meetings with each department manager: actual vs budget, review P&L, cash flow, and make strategic decisions on use of funds
• Review and approve filings for taxes, supervising processes for accounting
• Participate in annual audit process
• In partnership with the Fundraising Manager, actively solicit new institutional contracts and fee-for-service engagements that fit our core skills, confirm scope of work and allocate resources for effective project management
• In partnership with the Fundraising Manager, cultivate and steward current and potential donors, including foundations, high net-worth individuals and banking partners
• Serve as an in-country point-of-contact for institutional contracts
Programmes Oversight (25%)
• Oversee and manage all programmatic elements of the Anza Accelerator and Anza Growth Fund
• Supervise Client Services Manager to ensure that department meets sales and product goals
• Work closely with the AEC M&E Manager to track company evaluations/metrics
• Develop and implement strategic initiatives needed to meet company goals
• Use available tools (time tracking, CRM database, etc.) to create meaningful reports and insight
• Responsible for oversight of client service deliverables including assessments, consulting, etc.
• Maintain and improve client management workflow systems and oversee new client sales
• Work closely with Anza Growth Fund management to ensure portfolio performance and participate in investment committee meetings
Partnerships, external stakeholders & communications (10%)
• Serve as lead spokesperson for Anza
• Represent Anza at ministry meetings, conferences, and other public speaking engagements
• Develop and maintain relevant high-level partnerships and collaborations, including with local and national government partners
• Work closely with the Marketing Manager to ensure messaging meets Anza company objectives
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
A successful candidate will have previous significant leadership and management experience of a complex organization, and a deep understanding of the challenges for entrepreneurs and SME development in Tanzania.
Qualifications include:
• 8+ years’ experience in management consulting, entrepreneurship, international development
• Must be a Tanzanian national
• Self-starter with ability to produce results within budget and establish new systems
• Proven track record of leadership, planning and management responsibilities
• Significant experience with managing staff in a senior management role
• Budgeting and fundraising experience strongly preferred
• Must be excited by working in fast-paced, resource constrained start-up environment
• Fluent in written and spoken English, with strong preference for additional fluency in Swahili
• Unrelenting perseverance, personal integrity, and critical thinking skills
• Advanced education qualifications strongly preferred (i.e. Master degree)
